RIA Teacher Building Relationships with Students and Families Over Turkey

Before students head into Thanksgiving Break they’re being sent home with a full belly, thanks to Rock Island Academy 6th grade science teacher, Sean Turnipseed.

For the last five years, it has become a tradition for Mr. Turnipseed with the help of his wife to make a full-course Thanksgiving meal for his students. At first, the meal was just offered to his student but over time the event has grown each year, students can now invite their families too.

“I figured it would be nice to have another opportunity to interact with parents besides student conferences or talking specifically about grades or classroom behavior,” said Turnipseed.

Turnipseed also added it's nice for his students to be able to take a break and have a moment to enjoy being a class.

There was extra help this year too. Congresswomen Cheri Bustos stopped by to help serve the food and visit with the students.
