Over the weekend the team competed at the Regional First Lego League Competition at the John Deere World Headquarters in Moline.
RICMS team #3589 or also known as the “Numb Thumbs” has been competing for six years. The team is made up of ten students. his year the team consists of fourth and fifth graders and most of the team are new members.
The students placed 8th for robot and won Best Project! Their project was to identify a problem within the city of Rock Island. The students found many vacant lots and came up with an idea about what could go in that space. They designed a tiny home village and had to present their idea at the competition. They used Google Earth, coding apps to program their robot, learned how to research using the internet and learned how to use Publisher to design a brochure.
“They really worked hard and impressed a lot of people at this year's competition,” said Shaya Smith, RICMS and one of the coaches for Numb Thumbs.
Students fourth through eighth grade can participate in the Lego team. The team is coached by Mrs. Smith and Matt Carls.
The team hopes they can present their project to the Rock Island City Council.
