The Figge Art Museum's outreach program will be at Thomas Jefferson once a month for the rest of the school year. Right now, the outreach program is specific to first and second grade, but the hope is to continue the program next year and open it to more grades.
“Here at TJ, we jumped at the chance to have art. This is a great opportunity for the students to create art,” said Music teacher, Giovanna Davila.
Davila says for the last three years she has taken the sixth-grade classes on a full-day field trip to spend the morning at the Figge Art Museum and then the afternoon at the RME. She says it’s something the students enjoyed every year so she reached out to the Figge’s Outreach Program Educator Laura Wriedt to see how she could bring art lessons to Thomas Jefferson.
“Laura connects their art with children's literature and things they are learning in the classroom. Laura demonstrates how art connects to everyday life,” said Davila.
The Figge will also be at Thomas Jefferson on April 3rd for Fine Arts Day. They will bring two artists to work with kids from all grades that day.
Something new the school is doing this year is collecting students’ art to be displayed at the Figge. The art will be displayed in late April.
