RIHS Senior Awarded $5,000 for Thoms Above and Beyond Scholarship Project

The Thoms Family Above & Beyond Scholarship announced Rock Island High School senior Liam Haskill as the top scholarship winner during a special presentation before the Board of Education meeting on February 25.

Mr. Haskill received a $5,000 scholarship for his work on the “Best Buddies” project at Rock Island High School. He went through the process of setting up a chapter at Rocky, attending a training workshop, fundraising for activities and organizing the students with a buddy.

Three other finalists completed projects and received $500 scholarships: Gwendalyn Waggoner (Blossoming with Nature Special Education Project), Montana Hogan (Pete’s Anti-Bullying Workshop and Musical) and Zoe Veasey (Tennis Feeder Program Clinic).

The Stu and Mary Thoms Family established the Thoms Family Above & Beyond Scholarship in 2003 to identify and honor Rock Island High School students who demonstrate problem solving, organizational, and leadership skills in projects of their own choosing.
