New Reading Program Uses Books to Promote Diversity and Inclusion

A new partnership between the YWCA Quad Cities and the Rock Island-Milan School District's Cultural Quotient (CQ) Team is providing students a new reading program called Revolutionary Readers.

Revolutionary readers gives students access to highly relevant, diverse literature to provide them with opportunities to take different perspectives, practice empathy, and develop cultural humility.

Through literature, we celebrate individuals, embrace diversity, and encourage inclusivity. Teacher tools include lesson plans and books to foster courageous conversations in the classroom.

Right now the program is being piloted to 4th-grade students in the district. Each student received a copy of the book Just Ask! Be Brave. Be Different. Be You. By Sonia Sotomayor.

The goal is to offer the program to more grade levels in the future.
