RIHS Teachers Honored with Community Hero Awards

The awards are divided into several categories - Youth, Education, Organizations, Business, Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, Individuals, and Health Care Workers.

Both Ms. Miers and Mr. Williams were chosen for the Education category for their commitment to students.

Ms. Miers' nomination stated, "Sarah Miers is an amazing teacher leader at Rock Island High School! She is a valued member of Rocky and brings a humble yet strong leadership to the school. Aside from teaching Journalism, she serves as one of the lead advisors for the Rocky R.I.V.E.T.E.R.S. - Rock Island Voices Ensuring Their Equal Rights Are Secure - a student-focused empowerment club. She is also a part of the Rock Island High School Giving Tree Committee, and last year helped to find sponsors for 132 of our district's students and families.

Sarah’s work on the Watchtower Yearbook is also worth noting. She spearheads the photography for the yearbook and also works with students and trains them as staff photographers. For two years in a row, the Rock Island High School yearbook has been recognized for excellence in design and storytelling with awards from Heriff Jones. Celebrating student success and continuing to create opportunities for students is a hallmark of a great educator like Sarah Miers. RIMSD #41 is proud to have her as a part of the team!"

Mr. Williams' said, "Rock Island High School teacher Jarrin Williams is the type of person who always goes above and beyond for students, staff, families, and the community. He is passionate about his work and always strives to do what is best for our students. In the classroom, it is obvious that he cares deeply about students while making sure he is helping them reach their highest potential. He is all about building relationships with students, staff, and parents and it shows each and every day. He uses his photography skills to bring out the best in his subjects and it infuses positivity everywhere he goes.

As Head Coach of the Rock Island High School Boys' Cross Country team, Jarrin has built a strong program that paid off tremendously this year with the appearance of the entire team at the IHSA State Cross Country meet last weekend. Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, the smiles and positive energy made it a better day for all, and it is because of Jarrin Williams. Thank you for all you do for RIMSD #41!"

Congratulations!
