RICMS Students Awarded First-Ever Hays Heroes Award

At their end-of-the-year awards assembly, Rock Island Center for Math & Science gave out a brand new award, the Hays Heroes Award. The award will be given out to students for years to come.

The award is named after a beloved teacher, Kris Hays, and is a way to carry on her legacy. On Friday, June 2 two of Mrs. Hays' fourth-grade students were awarded the Hays Heros Award. Mrs. Hays passed away in the fall of 2022.

The award is given to two fourth-grade students who exemplify the qualities Mrs. Hays possessed. Professionalism, connection to kids, and dedication are just a few to name.

"I can say that Mrs. Hays had an impact on every staff member in this building and she is leaving a wonderful legacy behind," said RICMS principal Mr. Hawley.

This year's winners of the Hays Heros Award were Michelle Mason and Hezekiah Soe. Mrs. Hays' family was at the assembly to present the students with the award and gift them each with a book and a Whitey's Ice Cream gift card.
