How RIMSD #41 decides when to close school

The Rock Island-Milan School District No. 41 strives to keep schools open for students during the year. When inclement weather is on the horizon, determining whether school is open or closed seems simple, when in reality it is neither simple nor simplistic. No matter the decision made, some parents will not agree. Some parents have no one to care for their child(ren) and must go to work or lose their jobs. When schools are closed, they are put in a very difficult position. Other parents may disagree with the decision and the effects on student safety.

In times of inclement weather (most likely snow, ice or extreme cold) the decision to open or close schools is based on current and anticipated weather and road conditions that will
affect families during school hours.

The decision to close school is based on a number of variables:
  • Actual and projected snowfall and icing.
  • Assessment of city street and road conditions
  • Extreme cold conditions
Each weather condition is unique and it does not mean that schools will be open regardless of the weather conditions. Student safety is the first consideration in the Rock Island-Milan School District and there have been a number of times in the past when school was canceled due to roads that become impassable or as a result of excessively cold, icy, or snowy conditions.

If the decision is to keep school open and parents/guardians do not feel child(ren) would be safe, parents may decide to keep the child(ren) at home. The final decision is in the parent's hands. If parents choose to keep children home on a school day in inclement weather conditions, parents need to contact the school. The absence is considered “excused” and all work is accepted for full credit.

If the decision is made to close school, parents will be informed through the RIMSD #41 phone notification system (robo-call) or Remind. We will also alert the local media, use our social media channels, and put an update on our website www.rimsd41.org. Parents, students and staff can review our Winter Weather School Closing Guidelines in case there are any questions in the meantime.
