Board of Education Meeting Recap

The Rock Island-Milan #41 Board of Education held its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Administration Center. Here is a brief recap of what was discussed at the board meeting.

In action items, the Board approved:
  • Contract for service with New Solutions K12 in the amount of $34,750. Title II and district funds will be used.
  • High School yearbook contract extension with Herff Jones at a cost of $22,958.80 for the 2024-2025 school year.
  • Electrician contract for service extension with Lakewood Electric & Generator Service Inc. not to exceed $196,040.00. District operations and maintenance funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • Authorized bills for payment dated January 31st in the amount of $4,337,995.38.
  • Approved February donations.
  • The purchase of 35 microscopes from the Scope Shoppe, Inc. in an amount not to succeed of $10,500.00. Donated funds from the Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation will be utilized for this purchase. 
  • The purchase of camera kits from CWK Network Inc. in the amount of $137,500. The district will bring forth an annual purchase of camera kist each year for the 5-year grant period. EIR grant funds will be used for this purchase.
  • The purchase of 30 iPads from Apple Computer Inc. at a total cost of $425.40. RICMS funds and John Deere grant funds (through RIMEF) will be used for these purchases.
  • Contract for the Washington Jr. High School parking lot replacement project to McCarthy Improvement Company in an amount not to exceed $418,000.00. District operations and maintenance funds will be utilized for this purchase. 
  • Contract for the replacement of the fire alarm system at Frances Willard Elementary School with alternate #1 to Rock River Electric Inc. in an amount not to exceed $139, 507.00. A combination of 1% sales tax funds and school maintenance project grant funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • Contract for the Rock Island High School Phase II toilet rooms and plumbing renovations, with alternate #1 and alternate #2 to Swanson Construction Co., in an amount not to exceed $2,025,000.00. Bond funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • Overnight field trip request of the Rock Island High School debate team. The students will be traveling to Belleville West High School to attend the IDC State Debate Tournament in March. 
  • Overnight field trip request of the Rock Island High School African American Heritage Club. The students will be traveling to Tennessee State University for a college tour and the National Museum of African American Music in March. 
  • Certified and non-certified appointments, certified and non-certified resignations, non-certified employee suspension without pay, non-certified support coach, non-certified leave of absence, non-certified resignation, and non-certified employee termination.
The Board heard presentations on school board policy 7:30 Student Assignment and Intra-District Transfers and an update on the Aquatic Center. The Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources also provided the Board of Education with information on proposed positions for the 2024-2025 school year.
