Board of Education Meeting Recap

The Rock Island-Milan #41 Board of Education held its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Rock Island Center for Math & Science. Here is a brief recap of what was discussed at the board meeting.

The Board held a Committee of the Whole where they recognized the December Parent/Guardians of the Month.

Deb Gaddy (pictured above) and Corinthia Dothard (pictured below) were recognized at the Committee of the Whole for being chosen as Parent/Guardian of the Month for January.

Board Members heard a presentation from Rock Island Center for Math & Science staff who highlighted the partnership they have with John Deere.

The board then collaborated with community members on boosting school survey participation. The discussion explored ways to increase survey responses from parents, staff, and students. 
 
In action items, the Board approved:
  • Contract for the water main valve at the former Administration Center with JL Brady in the amount of $15,000. District Operations and Maintenance Funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • Contract for flooring in the Dean's Complex at Rock Island High School with L&L Floorcovering Inc., in the amount of $11,358,00. A combination of insurance proceeds and district operations and maintenance funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • The cleaning and restoration in the Dean's Complex at Rock Island High School with Servpro, in the amount of $10,311.70. A combination of insurance proceeds and district operations and maintenance funds will be utilized for this purchase. 
  • Authorized bills for payment dated February 15 in the amount of $5,495,262.79.
  • February donations.
  • Emergency heating repairs at Rock Island High School, in the amount of $11,118,00. District Operations and Maintenance funds will be utilized for this purchase.
  • Title carryover funds acquisition of the equipment/items in support of the high school SAT/PSAT testing in the amount not to exceed $47,733.00. This amount will be funded by the annual Title carryover funds.
  • Contract for plumbing in the Rock Island High school resource room with JL Brady, in the amount of $14,550.00. ARP-McKinney-Veto Homeless Funds will be utilized for this purchase. 
  • The attendance at the IASB Board Presidents' Academy conference for Michael Matherly and Terell Williams June 14-15, 2024 at an estimated cost of $805.28 per person.
  • Approved certified appointments, certified leave of absence, certified resignations, non-certified resignations, and non-certified appointments.
In personnel, the board took action on:
  • The board approved certified coach Zach Vroman for the 2024-2025 school year as head Boys Soccer Coach/ RIHS Salary - $10,905.00 for the season.

  • It was recommended to approve the termination and reclassification of a principal as an educator for the 2024-2025 school year. It was a split vote with three noes and three yeses so the motion did not pass. 
The Board heard another informational item on school board policy 7:30 Student Assignment and Intra-District Transfers.
