2024-2025 Winter Weather Preparedness Reminders

Here in the Midwest, we all know the weather can change dramatically by the day. As we move into the Winter season, please keep the following information in mind:

  1. Winter weather forecasts are "predictive." Meteorologists perform an important public service, and we make many decisions based on the information they provide us, but they cannot predict with certainty the timing of a storm, whether it will produce snow, rain, or freezing rain in a specific area, how much, or how cold it will be. Remember: Forecasts or conditions can change dramatically and suddenly.  School may have to dismiss early, or start late, on given days.  Please stay alert for communications from the Rock Island Milan School District via Remind, email, recorded messages, or social media posts.

  2. Preparedness is important. Please make sure your children are dressed for all weather: cold, wind, and snow. Make sure if they are driving to school that their vehicles are safe and maintained and that they have jumper cables, extra clothes, etc. Remind them of the importance of starting their cars and scraping them off completely for clear visibility. Remind them to drive with increased following distance from other vehicles and slower, especially in school zones or around bus stops.

  3. We may be in school on some very cold days. Please make sure your children are dressed in layers, and appropriately. Remember that bus routes can run slower in the winter, so on very cold days, scholars should not be left alone to stand at a bus stop or outside their homes for extended periods of time. They also should not be expected to walk a long distance. You can always drop students off directly at their school, or sit with them in your car at a bus stop if you are concerned.

  4. Remind students to be extra cautious when crossing on foot in front of moving vehicles. If a driver is driving too fast for conditions, he/she will not be able to stop or slow down as quickly as on dry weather days.

  5. Please be extra diligent in following protocols for drop off and pick up of students.

It’s important to keep in mind that safety improves dramatically if we are all just a little more careful during the winter months. Please reach out to your school or the Administration Center with any questions or concerns.
